5.0 out of 5 stars At last, an Android tablet to rule them all!, 29 Jun 2012

This review is from: Asus TF300T 10.1-inch Multitouch Tablet with Keyboard (Blue) (Nvidia Tegra 3 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 32GB HDD, WLAN, BT, 2x Cam, Android 4.0) (Personal Computers)
I've used a smaller android tablet before, (Archos 801) and my wife has an iPad, so I think I'm in a good position to review this.

This one has several clear advantages over an iPad, they are:

* Expandable storage,it's easy to pop in a memory card.
* Very easy to add content via USB or card, no painful fighting with iTunes
* A real physical detachable keyboard
* USB connectivity - try plugging a memory stick in an iPad!

While the keyboard is no match for a proper full size keyboard, I find it a HUGE improvement over an on screen keyboard. (It also the standard android home, back and options keys). It cleverly doubles as an extended life battery too, for seriously long all-day use. I've not run out of power yet. Also I've not used my laptop since I bought this.

I was a bit nervous about the way it clipped together, but in practice it has a firm positive action, and locks easily but securely into place. Construction is good, nice and solid, but I wouldn't want to drop it. The charger seems relatively smart, so it will charge the screen/pad section first and the keyboard at a lower priority, and use the keyboard battery in preference when its clicked together.

It does use a custom connector though - I'd seriously recommend getting a spare. It doubles as a USB connection for transferring content so it will get a lot of use - there's one connection on the screen part, and one on the base. The other end of the cable is standard USB, and that can go into those phone charging plugs with a USB socket on top. It won't charge from a USB socket on a PC, (not enough juice apparently). When you connect it to a PC, it pops up as a USB removable storage device.

It's an android device, so there's tons of good free stuff to put on it, and it's fast enough to do a good job on any of the games I have tried so far. The screen is bright enough most of the time, though a bit more might be nice when I'm on a bus with bright sunlight coming in through the window. It's good for watching video content on, and provides plenty of volume through the headphone socket.

Style is subjective, but I find its dark blue colours attractive enough - as usual with a tablet, the screen is an absolute magnet for greasy fingerprints, so keep a cleaning cloth handy.

Some other versions had problems, but for me the GPS and wi-fi work perfectly well.

I don't really use the cameras much, but I did give the user facing camera a go with skype, and it worked just fine. It also has a full size SD card slot, which should be handy if your proper camera uses those.

Bad points.

It's top heavy with the keyboard attached in laptop mode. This means it will rock back very easily. Probably unavoidable, and not a big deal but it does irritate.

Screen glitches. I very occasionally get odd responses to touch control on the screen. Not often but it does irritate. Pressing the power key off and on fixes this. I'm hoping an update will remove it once and for all.

Sound without headphones - not great, and not very loud.

Overall.
iPads may still have an edge in ease of use, but many other areas this has huge advantages - particularly USB connectivity, the keyboard, and expandable storage. With an 32 Gb memory card in the slot it will hold a LOT of media. I have it with me always these days, its the best portable gadget I have ever owned by some margin.

5.0 out of 5 stars ipad killer?, 6 July 2012

Was interested in getting a tablet after my son bought a Samsung Galaxy 10.1, which was very nice. Trouble is I am not a great user of music/video downloads etc, but I use office apps for which an onscreen keyboard is not very useful, so when I saw the Asus Transformer I thought I'd check it out - and wow, I was not disappointed.

Spec is excellent with 32 Gb storage, plus micro SD slot on the tablet as well as normal SD card and USB ports on the supplied keyboard. Keyboard is almost as useful as the one on my laptop, and there is a decent and useable basic office app included as supplied (with word/excel/powerpoint compatibility). Usual WiFi and bluetooth options Web-browsing is a doddle.

Why bother with a netbook? in fact most people who have seen the Asus Transformer with its keyboard presume it is a netbook until you detatch it. Screen is excellent. Loads of Android apps available, and you are not tied into Apple products as in the case of the iPad. There is a 3g version, but don't bother, it easily tethers to your android smartphone via wifi (set your phone as wireless hotspot and just connect up).

Sound is a bit 'thin' without earphones (but I play my PC sound and music through a full-size hifi system of 1980's vintage with 8 inch speakers, subs and tweeters so anything else sounds feeble anyway). Battery life is good and is topped up from the supplementary battery in the keyboard when you connect it up.

It feels a little heavy for its size with the keyboard attached, but it does feel robustly put together.

Is the Asus TF300T an iPad killer? I checked out the latest iPad at the same time. The cachet of Apple being non-Windows/non-PC is no real advantage when compared with the Android OS with its rapidly growing range of independently produced apps. The iPad may have a higher resolution screen, which is maybe worth something on a 38+ inch TV but pretty irrelevant on a tablet screen. The Asus screen is plenty sharp enough and slightly larger anyway, and with the keyboard, fast processor, Android 4(ICS)operating system, SD and USB storage on top of the installed 32 Gb, office-capable software as supplied and access to 0000's of downloadable apps to do virtually anything you want....? So- more capacity, higher spec and more versatile connectivity than an equivalent iPad for the same money and a keyboard thrown in to boot -? The Asus gets my money every time (in fact it did!)

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning piece of kit..., 24 Jun 2012
This review is from: Asus TF300T 10.1-inch Multitouch Tablet with Keyboard (Blue) (Nvidia Tegra 3 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 32GB HDD, WLAN, BT, 2x Cam, Android 4.0) (Personal Computers)
Having "ummed and aahhed" about an iPad for some months, when I came to look at the Asus T300T it soon became apparent that this machine knocks it into a cocked hat - the build quality, the screen quality, the speed, most importantly - a fabulous keyboard. Excellent cameras, very, very good software installed - boots up all but instantly - I really have not yet found a downside to this highly useful, good to handle, easy to use device.
Android apps are of course available in their hundreds - all at little or perhaps no cost - this means your machine is personalised in no time at all.
I cannot recommend this highly enough - buy it now!
